The most important factor to consider when sourcing exterior lighting for coastal applications, is the suitability and longevity of the light fixture. It is for this reason that we recommend premium quality materials such as 316 Stainless Steel, Brass and Solid Copper for coastal applications. These premium materials are the least susceptible to salt water corrosion, providing you with peace of mind that your exterior lighting will last for a considerable amount of time.

316 Stainless Steel

316 Stainless Steel is highly compatible for coastal use because of it's anti-corrosive composition. This type of stainless steel is the most reliable in marine environments, hence commonly known as "Marine Grade". Although this material is anti-corrosive, light fixtures made of 316 Stainless Steel may experience a common discolouration called 'Tea-Staining". Tea Staining is mainly cosmetic but should be treated as soon as the need arises. Tea Staining can be treated with our Stainless Steel maintenance kit and a rag.

Brass

Brass is an extremely durable material made from a mixture of copper and zinc. Brass light fixtures are typically used to introduce a rustic-feel to a home as they develop a natural patina over time. This patina is not to be confused with corrosion - patina is a natural ageing process of Brass and this patina makes the Brass light fixtures relatively low maintenance.

Solid Copper

Like Brass/Antique Brass, Solid Copper develops a charming natural green patina over time which creates a rustic appearance to your exterior. The original copper finish of the fitting can be restored with readily available commercial or household cleaning products and a little 'elbow grease'. Although because of this natural process - Copper and Antique Brass are two of the most low maintenance lighting materials on the market.

Location and Life Expectancy

Generally, if you are located within 5 kilometres (kms) of a coastal environment - you should be considering installing premium quality coastal-suitable light fixtures. Unfortunately, installing low quality lighting will more than likely result in additional electrician fees to replace the lights shortly after installation.
